In the fall of 2009, I visited The Mission District in San Francisco, California for the first time. The energy and spirit of The Mission felt much like that of East Los Angeles - except with steeper hills and uncongested traffic!
Murals and other street art in Frisco share similar characteristics with Los Angeles murals: they speak of the history, politics, struggles, and achievements that Mexican-Americans/Chicanos/Latinos have experienced in the United States. Needless to say, I felt an immediate connection with the art and its "mission". I hope to go back soon.
